چکیده

[1] Vertical structure and evolution of the wintertime Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode (NAM), the first Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) of geopotential height anomalies, are constructed from the 2005–2009 Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements in the entire middle atmosphere between 316 hPa ( 9 km) and 0.001 hPa ( 90 km). This is the first report of NAM structure extending into the mesosphere. The mode appears to be robust and it accounts for up to 70% of middleatmospheric variance before decreasing in the upper mesosphere. The vertical connection of the NAM modes suggests strong dynamic coupling between the mesosphere and stratosphere. Time evolution of the NAM suggests that the significant NAM anomalies typically appear first in the mesosphere and progress downward. NAM patterns derived from MLS observations are consistent with those derived from long-term reanalysis below the middle stratosphere. The NAM indexes show the mesospheric cooling signals during the major stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) in 2006 and 2009. Citation: Lee, J. N., D. L. Wu, G. L. Manney, and M. J. Carbon monoxide measured by the EOS Microwave Limb Sounder on Aura: First results

[1] Atmospheric carbon monoxide (CO) is measured by the EOS Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on NASA’s recently-launched Aura satellite. Descent has been observed in the 2004–2005 Northern Hemisphere winter polar mesosphere and upper stratosphere. During August and September 2004 enhanced CO was observed in the upper troposphere over India and Tibet. The MLS CO measurements are described and the ra...

Interrelated variations of O 3 , CO and deep convection in the tropical / subtropical upper troposphere observed by the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder ( MLS ) during 2004 – 2011

The interrelated geographic and temporal variability seen in more than seven years of tropical and subtropical upper tropospheric (215 hPa) ozone, carbon monoxide and cloud ice water content (IWC) observations by the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) are presented. Observed ozone abundances and their variability (geographic and temporal) agree to within 10–15 ppbv with records from sonde observ...

Seasonal stratospheric intrusion of ozone in the upper troposphere over India

The Model for Ozone and Related chemical Tracers-2 (MOZART-2) is used to examine the evolution of pollutant O3 in the upper troposphere over the Indian region. Vertical profiles of ozone mixing ratio retrieved from Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) aboard Earth Observing System (EOS) AURA satellite for the period 2005–2009 and Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) aboard (EOS) AURA for the period...

The photochemistry of carbon monoxide in the stratosphere and mesosphere evaluated from observations by the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite

[1] The photochemical production and loss rates for carbon monoxide (CO) in the stratosphere and mesosphere are evaluated using measurements from the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment‐Fourier Transform Spectrometer (ACE‐FTS). The distributions of reactive trace gases involved in the photochemistry of CO, including OH, CH4, O( D), Cl, as well as temperatu...

Zonal wave numbers of the summertime 2 day planetary wave observed in the mesosphere by EOS Aura Microwave Limb Sounder

[1] Recent observations and theoretical work suggest that the 2 day planetary wave in the summertime mesosphere is composed of multiple superposed zonal wave numbers. Here we use EOS Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) temperature data to determine the component zonal wave numbers of the 2 day wave in the mesosphere at latitudes of 70°S to 70°N from 2004 to 2009. We consider the effect of aliasin...
